How Diode Laser Works

The 808nm diode laser technology is very successful in skincare due to its solid science and real-world results. This type of laser penetrates deep into the skin to reach hair follicles. During treatment, light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This heats up the hair follicle and destroys the cells responsible for regrowth. The system is designed to be kind to the skin around the target area. Combined with the 808nm laser element, is the cooling plate which soothes the surrounding skin and reduces possible discomfort during treatment. Today, this type of laser is the preferred and most efficient way to get rid of the unwanted hair. It can reduce hair regrowth by up to 75% after just few sessions.

Benefits of 808nm Diode Laser

  • Long-lasting Hair Reduction. For example, one study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment shows a major decrease in hair after just six sessions within a year.

  • Works on All Skin Types. A study in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery claimed to safely remove hair - from the lightest to the darkest skin tones — without much risk of changing the skin’s pigment.

  • Comfort During Treatment. A real game-changer with the 808nm diode laser is its cooling feature, making treatments way more comfortable.

  • Quick Sessions for Big Areas. The 808nm diode laser’s high power and big spot size mean you can cover areas like the back in about 20 minutes instead of the usual hour, all without losing any effectiveness.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Laser hair removal has become a popular cosmetic treatment, due to the effectiveness and relative permanency that typically results. While laser hair removal works well for many patients, several treatments are required to achieve desired results. The total number of treatments and the need for touch-up procedures will vary from individual to individual. There are a number of factors that come into play when determining precisely how many laser hair removal treatments you might need. For most patients, the average number of laser hair removal sessions is five to eight, scheduled approximately four weeks apart. However, this number can vary based on certain patient factors.

The Day of Treatment

When patients arrive for their hair removal appointment, the treatment area should be shaved and clean. Additional instructions will dictate that patients skip their standard applications of lotion, makeup, perfume and deodorant on the treatment day. Any substances on the skin surface during treatment can refract the laser's energy and interfere with the laser's effectiveness.

Maintenance Treatments

Many patients find they must have additional treatments to maintain results. If you do require maintenance hair removal sessions, they are usually scheduled once or twice a year. The above factors may also affect your need for and frequency of maintenance hair removal sessions.

After The Laser Hair Removal Treatments

After the laser hair removal session, the skin may appear red and somewhat irritated from the treatment. This is completely normal, and the best thing patients can do at this time is to keep their skin well hydrated, protected from the sun, and free from excess irritation. Some laser clinics offer post-laser lotions that can help minimize redness and sensitivity for patients who desire it.

Hair Color

Dark hair typically responds best to laser hair removal, especially hair with coarser texture. These hair colors can typically achieve desired results in just three or four sessions. If you have light brown, blonde, or light red hair, you will probably require additional sessions of laser hair removal.

Skin Type

Laser hair removal targets the melanin in the hair follicles that gives hair its color. A contrast between the darker hair lighter skin complexions works the best for this treatment. This means that fair-skinned individuals typically require fewer laser hair removal sessions, while those with darker skin tones may need more. Tanned skin is not usually a good candidate for laser hair removal, because the laser will be drawn to the melanin in the skin rather than the hair follicle.
